One of the most important reasons for making maps has always been for political reasons. Whether it is defining the boundaries of state ownership and authority, or for negotiating agreements between people occupying adjacent land or for the ability to authoritatively allocate the resources of the land, these maps were the basis of agreements and legal claim. The result is borders for states, government oversight, military authority and ultimately the violation of map claims to war.
